A teen who witnessed a woman drive into a New Hampshire lake didn’t hesitate before jumping in to save her.
Officials said the woman hit the accelerator instead of the brake, and drove off the dock into Lake Winnipesaukee on Monday afternoon, WMUR reported.
Kingswood Regional High School senior Zachary Cray, 18, said he “turned around and saw the roof of a car” sticking out of the water.
He and another good Samaritan then jumped in to save the woman, who was still behind the wheel.
Cray said he assured the panicked woman that he would get her back on dry land.
“You’re going to get out, I promise,” he said he told her.
Luckily, the window of the car was down, so Cray didn’t have to break it.
“The water was up high enough that we could basically float her out through the window,” he said.
Others who were on the dock helped to pull the woman up. The woman later thanked Cray for helping to save her life.
The driver was not hurt, but it took hours to hoist the car from the water, and environmental crews were called in to contain a small fuel leak.
