A woman’s bold move during a recent carjacking has gone viral — and when you watch the clip, you’ll understand exactly why.
Melissa Smith, 27, of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, made the split-second decision to leap onto the hood of her car in an effort to stop a man who was attempting to hijack the vehicle and drive away.
Smith was getting gas when a man covertly jumped inside of her car. When she realized what was happening, rather than scream for help or rely on authorities to handle it, she decided to take matters into her own hands, clinging to the hood as the thief started to drive away, the Independent reported.
“I had the thought in my head. ‘Do I go after my purse or do I stop my car?'” Smith told WISN-TV. “And the price tag of my car flashed through my head.”
She said she didn’t even notice the culprit as she was pumping gas until he was already inside of the vehicle.
“Someone was in my car,” Smith said. “And [I had] my, ‘Oh, hell this isn’t happening to me today’ moment.”
The man laughed as he slammed on the breaks twice to try and throw her off the hood, but to no avail. Smith wasn’t going anywhere.
“He was laughing while I was on my car, and he was trying to throw me off, so zero remorse,” Smith told WISN, noting that, though it wasn’t the “smartest and safest thing” to get on top of the car, she did what she felt was right in the moment.
“I went with my instinct,” she said.
Security footage shows Smith on top of the car and the culprit abruptly fleeing. Smith then had to act quickly as the still-moving car drifted out of the gas station and onto the road.
In the end, she managed to get back into the driver’s seat before a collision with nearby cars unfolded.
