***UPDATE***

The search for a missing girl abducted from an evening church service has ended tragically, with what authorities believe to be her remains being found in a well on a private property about 4 miles from where she was last seen alive.

The nation was captivated by the case, and the family received an outpouring of support including prayers and financial donations.

There have been no arrests in the case so far, but the girl’s uncle remains in custody. According to KHOU.com:

A family member who lived at the house was questioned in Kayla’s disappearance and death, and is currently in the Smith County Jail on a Federal Immigration Customs detainer. According to Sheriff John Smith, additional charges are anticipated.

Kayla Gomez-Orozco was at church with her parents, waiting in the lobby as they chatted with friends after the service had concluded.
