‘Warped Worldview’: The 5 Biggest Struggles Among People Who Use Pornography

XXX Church, a Christian ministry that works to help people battling porn addiction, has released a list of the five most common struggles among people who commonly view smut.

First, there’s the issue of loneliness, which XXX Church said is a commonality among porn users due to the false connections that result from the rampant consumption of adult content.

“Even though porn promises connection with seemingly unlimited partners, the porn user knows deep within their souls that these connections are false; they only serve to heighten the sense of loneliness within the user,” reads a blog post explaining the impact of smut on the general public.

The second struggle mentioned by the ministry is a “warped worldview” — essentially the idea that people start to live in fantasy  when it comes to sexual activity. It’s a paradigm XXX Church believes can lead porn users to start to integrate the unrealistic behavior they’re seeing on screens into their real lives.

This essentially leaves people observing others as sexual objects and more routinely reducing them as such.

The third struggle mentioned in the post is anxiety — an emotion purportedly created when people use porn in secret, concealing it from their partners, children and loved ones. The fear of being caught apparently creates angst for some people.

And the final two struggles cited in the piece are: shame and a diminished sex life. The former is self-explanatory, as some people feel ashamed of their continued porn consumption. The latter, though, is perhaps more dire in that it can have an impact on intimacy between couples.

“Porn … can dramatically affect the porn user physically, and that effect is almost always negative,” reads the blog post. “The majority of porn users report a diminished sex life, brought about by their reliance on porn. Sex becomes less satisfying for both them and their partner, and far from ‘spicing things up,’ porn almost always brings things down.”

The anti-porn movement has gained increased steam in recent months after former “Baywatch” star and Playboy model Pamela Anderson came out publicly against smut. She published a Wall Street Journal op-ed alongside Rabbi Shmuley Boteach back in August, decrying porn as a public danger.

“Young people are looking at this thinking, ‘This is how I have to act in a sexual relationship’ or ‘This is how I have to act,” Anderson recently said on British TV show “This Week,” doubling down on her concern over porn’s impact.

Numerous studies have also found that porn can have a negative impact on individuals and marriages, alike. One recent study claims porn consumption can double one’s chances of divorce, and another — conducted by Josh McDowell Ministry — found that young people watch porn at least weekly, according to Deseret News.
