Rekindle kindness.

A college professor in Kentucky has decided to post a simple, two-word message on a giant billboard — and he’s hoping it makes a major impact.

David Anderson, an economics professor at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, decided to erect a billboard that simply reads, “Be Kind.” Subtext under the main message implores passerby to “Make the world a better place.” Anderson told The Advocate Messenger that he’s hoping state politicians inside the nearby capitol take heed.

“This is my own grassroots effort to rekindle kindness in this turbulent era of travel bans and Twitter attacks,” the professor told the outlet. “We need reminders to be kind when, as a nation, we are tempted to turn our backs on refugees, immigrants, minorities, the poor, students, women and people of different religions and gender preferences.”

After thinking deeply about how to encourage kindness, Anderson said he ended up landing on a billboard as the best method for spreading his message. In the end, he told The Advocate-Messenger that he worries compassion is missing from decision-making.

“My concern is that we are forgetting the importance of kindness,” he said. “Beyond the sad results of not treating others as we would like to be treated, unkindness leads us astray of policies that would protect natural resources for future generations.”

Anderson continued, “It is clear that when we have turned against trading partners, the result has been trade wars and a lose-lose situation. Of course, what goes around comes around.”

Of course, not everyone will agree with the specific social and political views Anderson seemingly expressed in his interview with the outlet, though his “be kind” message certainly comes at a pertinent and turbulent time in the American experience, as the nation is still reeling months after the conclusion of what can only be described as a highly contentious presidential campaign.

Anderson also launched a website — RemindToBeKind.com — that urges people to share reminders on social media of how important it is to treat others with respect.
