There are few things that hold true throughout different cultures across the globe, but one that does is the unpredictably adorable behavior of a toddler.

Enter Imoh Umoren II, a Nigerian two-year-old defying the terrible twos with hugs. While participating in his first nursery school race, the toddler veered off course for the best reason ever: to give his dad a hug.

34-year-old Imoh Umoren explained that during prep-sessions he would give his young son hugs. When the real race started, Umoren II must have become slightly confused, looking for a hug rather than the finish line.

The dad immediately shared the incident on Twitter, saying, “My son finished 4th in the race because instead of running across the finish line he ran to hug me. Ah well, won my heart.”

Umoren told the Huffington Post that, “It was his first race, but we had been rehearsing all week in the front yard.”

Despite a strong start, “it sort of fell apart when he spotted me taking a picture of him and came to hug me,” he explained.

His son is “a bit of a hugger,” he told HuffPo. “Maybe to him, that is a natural ending to a race: run into daddy’s arms.”

After hugging his son, Umoren tried to help his toddler understand how a race works, which is when he realized that his son didn’t know that this was a competition.

But you know what they say: “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.”

And he did. Imob participated in the second race the following day, coming in third!
