World Series champ David Ross and his “Dancing With the Stars” partner Lindsay Arnold performed a near-perfect waltz on Monday night, but it was the commentary before their dance that ended up being the most noteworthy, as Ross broke down in tears over Arnold’s kind words about his character.

“He really loves his family, he loves his teammates and he loves genuine people,” Arnold said of Ross. “He’s the best example of, ‘Yes success is great and it makes you feel good, but family and your values and who you are as a person matters more than anything else.'”

In watching Ross and Arnold interact in the video package, it became clear that the two have formed a deep friendship, with Arnold calling him a “second dad,” while also reflecting on the positive values she sees exuding from the former baseball star.

So, Arnold choose the song “Humble and Kind” by country singer Tim McGraw for the duo to dance to, saying that she believes humility and kindness are values she’s seen Ross trying to instill in his own kids — values she believes his parents also taught him.

“When I listen to (the song) I feel like, Okay, this is definitely how David was raised,'” Arnold told Ross in the video package. “I see the way you interact with your kids. I see that’s how you want them to be.”

Ross agreed, explaining that his dad worked diligently to teach him to say “please,” “thank you” and to hold the door for others, and that he’s learned an essential life lesson that no matter “how big you get … don’t forget who you are.”

“The most important job you can have as a parent is to pass along the values that you think are important in life and the lessons you learned,” Ross said before breaking down in tears when he explained how moved he was that Arnold was able to sense those values in him after only knowing him for two, short months.
