President Donald Trump said comedian Kathy Griffin should be “ashamed of herself” following the release of a disturbing photo showing her holding a faux bloodied and severed head that resembled the commander-in-chief.
“Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning. “My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”

The president’s response came after a national outcry on Tuesday over a photo shoot Griffin did with celebrity photographer Tyler Shields. With bi-partisan outrage quickly igniting, individuals like Chelsea Clinton and Donald Trump Jr. — the president’s eldest son — spoke out in disgust.
Disgusting but not surprising. This is the left today. They consider this acceptable. Imagine a conservative did this to Obama as POTUS? https://t.co/QdghcbIjS7

This is vile and wrong. It is never funny to joke about killing a president. https://t.co/zIiuKoMyFw

While Griffin reportedly at first defended the photos in now-removed tweets, she has since issued an apology.
“I’m a comic. I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it,” Griffin said in an Instagram video issued on Tuesday night. “I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong.”
She said she will ask Shields to take the photo down.
