Two tweets sent on Thursday morning by President Donald Trump have ignited a firestorm as well as a renewed debate about civility, particularly when it comes to the tone that many critics believe the U.S. president should maintain.

Trump’s latest social media rant was aimed at Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” — and it isn’t going over too well.

“I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me,” Trump wrote. “She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!”

The tweets sparked a flurry of reaction from citizens, journalists and politicians, alike.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina made it clear that he felt the tweets were “beneath the office” of the presidency — and he wasn’t done there, saying that the messages are “what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America.”

Others, agreed. Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska added, “Please just stop. This isn’t normal and it’s beneath the dignity of your office.”

Mr. President, your tweet was beneath the office and represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America.

Of course, Trump supporters noted that Scarborough and Brzezinski have long been critics of the president, arguing that his attack was merely a response to the claims they’ve made against him.

Then, there was Brzezinski’s brief response to the entire debacle.
