Cori and her husband were 18 and 20 years old respectively when they unexpectedly got pregnant for the first time. They were unmarried and worked hard to make ends meet, but they created a loving home for their son Blake.
As Blake got older and their financial situation improved, the couple tried to have another child, but medical complications prevented Cori from getting pregnant. Blake longed to have a sibling but came to understand it might not be in the cards him. That all changed, however, this fall.
In a heartwarming video from Love What Matters (below), Blake learns that his mom is pregnant and his dream of becoming a big brother is finally coming true. His joy is palpable as he breaks down in tears, and his dad, a combat veteran, shared a bit more background with Love What Matters.
“We used love, prayer, family, and faith to persevere through many obstacles and hurdles that life would throw at us,” he explained. “As our son, Blake, grew older and we became more financially stable, we knew it was time to grow our little family. However, it was not in God’s plans at this time… Fertility was not an option for us throughout the entire process.”
“In 2016, I was called to serve and was deployed for a year. Nearly five months ago I returned home to, what we considered, the perfect family,” he continued. “Once again, our son began to question why he was the only child. Since he was now nine, it was easier to explain and have him understand. Fast forward to November 14, 2017… We were blessed to share the exciting news with Blake. It is a moment in life that not one of us, will ever forget.”

"I was 20 and my wife, Cori, was 18 at the time of our first pregnancy. We were not married at this time, and decided to take things slow to ensure we would have a happy and healthy family. Together we used love, prayer, family, and faith to persevere through many obstacles and hurdles that life would throw at us. As our son, Blake, grew older and we became more financially stable, we knew it was time to grow our little family. However, it was not in God’s plans at this time. In due time, Blake grew curious as to why we never had another child. Cori and I took the time to explain that due to medical complications, it would appear that we would not be able to have another child. It was hard for a five year-old to comprehend this, though. The video begins with the nine-year-old opening a box filled with baby books as he confusedly looks to his parents. He then gets to a t-shirt that reads, “This guy is finally going to be a big brother,” and he begins to realize what is happening.
“Are we adopting a kid,” he asks.
“I’m pregnant,” Cori exclaims as Blake emotionally runs into his mother’s arms. “Are you happy… Are you excited? You’re going to be a big brother!”
The tears continue to flow as Blake adorably admits he is crying in part because he is happy but also because he’s not going to be “the only child anymore.”
