Listen to “Duck Dynasty” star Missy Robertson speak with a woman about a suicide attempt — and the powerful story of struggle and triumph that followed:

A woman who once attempted suicide has revealed the powerful lesson she learned as a result of her tragic circumstances.

The Louisiana woman named Ruth recently shared her touching story on Missy Robertson’s “The Overcomers” podcast, telling the former “Duck Dynasty” star that she learned something profound about her faith after her recovery.

“I felt so hopeless. I was really in a dark place,” Ruth said, noting that she and her husband were facing a number of problems at the time. “I took a handful of Tylenols … I tried to commit suicide.”

Ruth recalled how she took the pills in front of her husband and then locked herself in her bedroom and lay on her bed.

“I was giving up,” she said. “I didn’t want to suffer through all those arguments anymore.”

In the end, though, Ruth was rescued and had her stomach pumped before being placed in an institution for evaluation. It wasn’t until her young son arrived at the hospital to visit her that she realized the gravity of what she had done.

“I saw my son’s face … when he saw me his face lit up,” she said. “And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what have I done? If I died, what would happen to them?'”

Ruth said that she realized that she had made a dire error in her Christian walk, placing her husband above God.

“I saw my husband as my God instead of Jesus,” she said.

Ruth also dove deep into her difficult upbringing and the abuse that she faced as a child, tearfully recalling how her father harmed her both physically and verbally. Additionally, she had some family dynamics that she said contributed to low self-esteem.

“It was really hard for me to accept the fact, for me growing up, that I didn’t have a normal set of parents,” she said. “I was born in Indonesia and I came here in 2006 to follow my husband that I married in the same year.

She added, “In my culture, they value the son more than the daughter, so that contributed to my low self-esteem growing up.”

Despite her challenges, though, Ruth has overcome and is now sharing her story in an effort to inspire others.
