Singer-songwriter Andy Grammer recently opened up about an incredible experience that can only be described as divine intervention.

Last month, the “Keep Your Head Up” singer was dining at a Hampton Beach restaurant when a group of elderly women caught his eye. Grammer was really missing his mother, who passed away nine years ago, and felt prompted to pick up the ladies’ tab. Little did he know, however, that God intended to use the encounter to bless him.

At first, he was just going to pay the check and leave without saying a word. But something inside of him told him to tell the women how their mere presence brightened his day.

Grammer recalled the event in a Facebook post:

“… something felt like I should tell them I missed my mom, like they might like to hear that. So I walked over and said ‘you are five of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever seen, I lost my mom awhile back and something about seeing you made me miss her this morning so I’m getting your check.’”

Was sitting at breakfast in Hampton Beach and across the restaurant were five SUPER CUTE elderly ladies. I don’t know…

Then, something extraordinary happened. One of the women sitting at the table, Mary, “popped up with arms wide open,” extending a big “mom hug” to Grammer.

“COME HERE, I lost my son and really needed this,” she said.

Mary wore a button on her shirt commemorating her son, whom she’d just lost to cancer.

“And then she gave me a mom hug I needed and I gave her a son hug she needed,” Grammer wrote.

Mary commented on Grammer’s post with a photo of her and her friends, Margaret, Betty Anne, Joan and Beth.

“Your Mom sent you to us today,” she wrote.

Grammer lost his mother to breast cancer in 2009. The disease wasn’t detected until the very late stages, giving him only a few days to say goodbye.

The artist has been very open about his close relationship with his late mother, citing her as the inspiration for his song, “Ladies.” In 2015, Grammer dedicated one of his “Dancing With The Stars” performances to his mom.

Back in January, Grammer wrote a special Instagram post for the nine-year anniversary of his mother’s death:

Today is 9 years since my sweet mother left this world. I brought my little Louisiana K Grammer to her grave site this morning and it was extra special sweet. I remember standing at this spot shell shocked as we lowered her body into the ground. All I knew was I had lost my center, that there was a huge whole in my world and that it could never be filled. Little did I know having a mother on the other side can be pretty special too. I am not foolish enough to think that any of my success has been without the help of a badass mother pulling strings through the universe. I love you mom. We put the K in the middle of her name so she will always have you in the middle of her life. I hope she will have your playfulness, your spirit, your sense of justice, your love of chocolate, your faith, and your thirst for depth in life. One thing for sure is that she’s already got your blue eyes. This life is beautiful, but it becomes even more beautiful when you are forced to face the fact that there is more to this life then this life. To all those who have lost someone close to them, they are around… It’s a mystical relationship that never ends. Sending love to wherever you are my sweet mother. #louieinstagrammer #mom

“All I knew was I had lost my center, that there was a huge whole in my world and that it could never be filled,” he captioned a photo of him and his baby daughter, Louisiana, visiting his mother’s grave. “Little did I know having a mother on the other side can be pretty special too. I am not foolish enough to think that any of my success has been without the help of a badass mother pulling strings through the universe. I love you mom. “

“This life is beautiful, but it becomes even more beautiful when you are forced to face the fact that there is more to this life [than] this life,” he continued. “To all those who have lost someone close to them, they are around… It’s a mystical relationship that never ends.”
