Country artist Jo Dee Messina has spoken out about her battle with cancer, revealing how her faith continues to sustain her during such an uncertain time. In September 2017, the “Bring on the Rain,” singer announced that she had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of the disease, and was undergoing immediate treatment.

Now, the mother-of-two has opened up about her illness and revealed how her firm faith in Jesus, combined with her love of worship music, has strengthened her during this time of strife.

“After being diagnosed, I was playing a winery in Missouri and I basically said ‘FYI, this is what’s going on,’” Messina, 48, told PEOPLE in a recent interview. “It doesn’t change the fact that God is good.” While she hasn’t been specific about the exact type of cancer she is battling, Messina noted that she was “leaning on God” throughout the treatment process, which involved several surgeries.

“I’m letting Him take charge,” added the country hitmaker. “It’s what’s best for my soul right now. Every biopsy and every result…it feels like an eternity goes by. I know that God has me. I’m filled with gratitude and joy.”

Incredible, despite the turmoil and trauma of her cancer ordeal, Messina has decided to release some new music. The song of choice? “Reckless Love,” by Bethel Music worship leader, Cory Asbury. “I heard this song in 2017 as part of a package from Bethel Music and watched a version of it on YouTube,” the singer explained, adding that the track “took the wind” out of her with its profound lyrical content.

Thanks to @people for posting the full version of #RecklessLove and being so supportive of getting out the message of how much our Father loves us.https://t.co/qXSlh6CNfG

“It was then released to radio (by Asbury) and I was like, ‘It’s that song again.’ It resonates with my soul and my spirit, especially considering as many mistakes I have made,” Messina added.

But simply getting the single out there has been a struggle in itself. “I’ve been in the studio in pain,” she said. “On certain days, it was hard to breath and I was barely able to stand up at the microphone.”

Still, the brave vocalist pressed on. The message of God’s love, she said, was just too important to keep to herself. “God provides a love that we will never understand,” she declared. “Human love is so conditional. His love isn’t.”

Continue to pray for Jo Dee as she battles on against this awful disease.
