With just a small handwritten note, Christian author and pastor Mark Driscoll summed up the truth about abortion and the havoc it has wreaked on earth since Jesus’ birth.

“When Jesus was a baby, Satan prompted the government to murder babies,” the note reads. “New government. Same old demons.”

Driscoll’s tweet was in response to the passage of a new law in New York state that essentially legalizes abortion up until the point of birth.

Earlier this week, the state Senate — controlled by Democrats — approved the Reproductive Health Act by a vote of 38-24. Soon thereafter, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed the bill into law. For years, Republicans controlled the legislative chamber and blocked the ambiguous proposal that permits abortion within 24 weeks of the start of a pregnancy or “at any time when necessary to protect a woman’s life or health.”

The pastor’s biblical reference was to Matthew 2:16-18, which chronicles King Herod’s order for the government to kill all male children in Bethlehem who were two years old and younger. He wanted to ensure the newborn Jesus was killed.

Herod’s plan was foiled when an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to protect the newborn savior.

Today, many Christians around the world observe the Feast of the Holy Innocents, or Innocents’ Day, held a few days after Christmas to memorialize the children killed by Herod’s command. The early church revered them as the first martyrs, though it is not clear when exactly the day of remembrance was established.
