The iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, erupted in flames Monday. The reason for the blaze remains unclear, but images and video posted on social media show a raging fire burning from the top of the historic place of worship and major tourist destination, with large clouds of smoke filling the Paris skyline.

It’s getting worse. But the fire brigade has turned up. Hard to see how the tackle this. The plume of smoke is already 100s of feet long. pic.twitter.com/5LBf2odKka

France 24 reported that the roof had “entirely collapsed.”

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted Monday, saying that his thoughts go out to all Catholics and all French citizens. He noted that he was “sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”

Notre-Dame de Paris en proie aux flammes. Émotion de toute une nation. Pensée pour tous les catholiques et pour tous les Français. Comme tous nos compatriotes, je suis triste ce soir de voir brûler cette part de nous.

— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) April 15, 2019

The cause of the sudden inferno remains unclear, though Catholic churches in Paris have frequently been the subject of vandalism in recent months.

Oh my goodness!!!

Notre Dame Cathedral is a church that took 182 years to build and was completed in 1345 and today it is on fire. This is already a sorrowful Holy Week.
