Bo Nix, freshman quarterback for the Auburn University Tigers, said recently none of his success would happen if it weren’t for God’s role in his life.
In late September, Nix shared a little about his faith after sports reporter Holly Rowe asked him about a bracelet he wears that reads, “Humble Over Hype.”
“It reminds you to stay humble, because there’s a lot of hype around you — and [it reminds you] how you can have an influence on other people at the same time,” Nix explained. “That’s really important.”
Rowe said it can be difficult to remain humble, particularly when you’re part of a team that has — so far — enjoyed an undefeated season.
To stay humble, Nix tries his best not to focus on just the athleticism and Auburn’s success, but also to be “the teammate that the guys want to follow, and then you’re doing the best you can to win the game on Saturday.”
Nix also said he attends church every Sunday, no matter how difficult or tiring the game the night before might have been. He has made church a priority because, “I know that all things come from the Lord and He can take them away really quickly.”
He told Rowe he is “thankful” for the success he’s had.
Humble Over Hype, it turns out, is a nonprofit started by Chelsea Vaughn designed to encourage people like Nix to believe, “You are more than an athlete.” The organization’s mission statement is 1 Peter 5:6, which reads, “So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.”
Nix received the bracelet as a gift from teammate Javaris Davis.
“We are never giving up on spreading this message,” said Vaughn.
