Hailey Bieber engaged with fans on social media this week after several called her faith into question.
It all began Wednesday, when the model did a Q&A on her Instagram story, asking followers for feedback on potential Halloween costumes, Yahoo! News reported. Responses quickly rolled in — including some from followers questioning her Christian faith for celebrating Halloween.
“Aren’t u a Christian?” one fan wrote.
”Yes. I still dress up for Halloween,” Bieber replied, standing by her faith.
“FAKE CHRISTIAN,” another fan added.
“Our kids are gonna celebrate too :),” Bieber wrote back.
The newlywed also shared throwback pictures of her favorite costumes from past Halloweens. One year, she dressed up as an 80s-style workout Barbie. On her first Halloween in New York City after moving out of her parents’ house, Bieber dressed up as Sandy from “Grease.”
The debate over whether Christians should celebrate Halloween resurfaces every October, without fail. Some believe Christians shouldn’t, due to concerns over its potential association with the occult. Others believe it’s fine as long as Christians avoid evil costumes and practices. Some Protestants celebrate Reformation Day, commemorating the day Martin Luther famously nailed his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenburg, Germany. Many Catholics celebrate All Hallows Eve, the day before All Saints Day on Nov. 1, by attending a vigil Mass and trick-or-treating dressed as famous saints.
The bottom line, as Bieber kindly pointed out, is that there is no definitive way for Christians to celebrate (or not celebrate) Halloween. Given this, we should be careful before criticizing others for choosing to partake in the festivities.
