Floyd Mayweather, an American boxing legend and famed promoter, will pay the funeral costs for George Floyd, the 46-year-old black man killed last week after a former Minneapolis police officer held him under his knee for nearly 10 minutes.

The disgraced officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Mr. Floyd’s death has sparked massive protests as well as violent riots around the country — the latter of which have been rebuked by Floyd’s own family.

“He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, [Mayweather] is definitely paying for the funeral,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, according to ESPN.

Ellerbe went on to say the 43-year-old athlete has been in touch with the Floyd family. They have accepted his generous offer to cover the funeral expenses for Mr. Floyd.

“Floyd has done these kind of things over the last 20 years,” Ellerbe said, referring to the decades of ministry work Mr. Floyd took part in when he lived in Houston.

He added that Mayweather didn’t want to talk about the donation.
