Actor Kirk Cameron believes parents are beginning to wake up to a growing crisis in our public schools and, as a result, are increasingly turning to homeschool alternatives.
“The pandemic freaked so many parents out. With the schools locking down and kids coming home, parents got a front-row seat and discovered that their children are being taught things that they are not happy with,” he told CBN’s Faithwire. “Things like Critical Race Theory, gender identity, choose your own pronouns, do I want to be a boy or a girl, hate the country because it’s fundamentally flawed.”
Cameron said parents are seeing how such issues are pervading public schools and are concluding it’s “a no go.” Plus, many families enjoyed having their kids home during the pandemic and discovered how these new dynamics benefitted their familial situations.
As a result, the “Growing Pains” and “Fireproof” star said many families took to homeschooling — and he documents their journeys in his new film, “The Homeschool Awakening.”
Watch Cameron break down the public school crisis and his new movie:
“The Homeschool Awakening,” in theaters nationwide June 13 and June 14 through Fathom Events, promises to explore the “adventures of dynamic American families on a mission to put fun and faith back into learning.”
“We actually follow about 17 families,” Cameron said. “They show you how they’ve made it work for their family.”
The actor, who has six children, also explained his own family’s journey into homeschooling, revealing the misconceptions he had before diving in. Now, he’s helping others understand the benefits while also debunking myths and stereotypes.
Cameron spoke pointedly about some of the moral breakdowns he sees in the public schools, charging that true faith and virtues have been “deeply undermined in most of the public school system today,” as parents worry about the subjects and topics being taught.
“We’re realizing that our kids are actually not being so much educated as they are being indoctrinated and groomed toward things like things racism, toward things like sexual chaos, toward things that are making them into little leftist revolutionaries rather than actually teaching them to love God, to love their family, love their country and the values that made us the strongest, freest, most prosperous nation in the world,” he said.
Cameron’s view is that parents and families must take the mantle of leadership to educate their children.

“We want to stop the damage,” Cameron said. “And we want to enter into an education that is tailored for our children.”
In the end, the actor and producer said the debate over education and indoctrination comes down to one key question: to whom do children belong?
“The real question is: do your children belong to you, or do your children belong to the federal government?” he said. “‘The Homeschool Awakening’ is to remind you that children are a gift from the Lord.”
