Whoopi Goldberg Suggests God Supports Abortion Because He ‘Doesn’t Make Mistakes,’ Gave People ‘Freedom of Choice’

The lead co-host of “The View” invoked God this week in her support for abortion.

Speaking with former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who left the daytime talk show in 2013 but returned Wednesday as part of the series’ 25th anniversary, co-host Whoopi Goldberg seemingly suggested God approves of abortion.

Goldberg went so far as to say “God doesn’t make mistakes” and gave her — and all women — the intellect “to know when” abortion is the “right” decision to make.

Hasselbeck, who is a born-again and outspoken Christian, interrupted Goldberg, voicing her clear disagreement with her interpretation of God’s view on abortion. Goldberg, though, continued.

“Because I know my relationship — you know, my relationship [with God] is always choppy,” she said. “I also know that God made me smart enough to know that if there are alternatives out there that can work for me, I will investigate them.”

Goldberg says "God doesn't make mistakes" and thus it's in his plan to have women choose abortion."God made us smart enough to know when it wasn't going to work for us. That's the beauty of giving us freedom of choice."

Goldberg’s understanding of right and wrong is rooted in the sinful belief that if a human being feels or thinks a certain way, it must then be right. Human beings have been tempted by that lie since the beginning of creation, when, in the Garden of Eden, the serpent convinced Eve that, if she just ate of the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, she could be “be like God” (Genesis 3:5).

Later, in Jeremiah 17:9, the Old Testament prophet warned people against trusting their feelings as their ultimate authority, because those inclinations almost always end in disaster. He wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9, NLT).

Scripture also clearly reveals God’s high view of human life. From the moment of conception, the life in the mother’s womb has innate value as God’s image bearer (Genesis 1:27). In Jeremiah 1:5, the prophet wrote, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations” (NLT). And in Psalm 139:13, David wrote, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb” (NLT).

With her faith in mind, Hasselbeck pushed back against Goldberg’s support for abortion, noting she and the other left-leaning panelists on the show were “failing to mention … that there are options out there that extend beyond abortion,” adding there are “thousands of agencies” around the country dedicated to supporting women before, during, and after birth.

Hasselbeck said:

[T]here are options out there. There are thousands of agencies that wrap around women that might not be able to care for the baby once born or may not want the baby when they’re pregnant or maybe it was unexpected and they’re in a hard situation, but that will come around at no cost and wrap around you.

And I might not change your minds, but I hope women out there know to look for the nonprofits, look for the agencies that help you create a birth plan and match you with an adoptive family who may have suffered miscarriage after miscarriage who want to care for the baby. So, that option is real and it’s out there. And I don’t believe they’re giving women half the information out there. And I think those lives have a precious value on them.

“I personally believe not because I believe life has value because I believe our Creator assigns value to life and that those lives have plan and purpose over them, as designed by God, that are not limited to the circumstances of conception, nor the situations they’re born into,” she added.

During the segment, Goldberg also suggested protecting abortion access is just following the Golden Rule in Matthew 7:12. She told Hasselbeck, “God said, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ I will not make that decision for anybody.”

“What about the life in the womb?” asked Hasselbeck. “I don’t believe there is any circumstance that we should [give] the death penalty to an innocent life.”

As the segment was coming to an end and heading into a commercial break, Goldberg tried to argue that every panelist on “The View” — including all those who support abortion — are really “pro-life.”

“[B]efore we go,” she said, “let me just point out: no one at this table is not pro-life. Nobody at this table is not pro-life. I just want to make sure we all know that. Nobody is happy about going to get an abortion.”

“That,” Hasselbeck quickly replied, “is not pro-life.”
