‘The View’ Co-host Says Bill Maher ‘Should Be Ashamed’ for Condemning ‘Wokeness’

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin is shaming HBO’s Bill Maher for his criticism of “wokeness.”

The ABC presenter argued the word “woke” has been “co-opted by the right” and “Bill Maher himself,” adding, “He is comparing ‘woke’ with identity politics. He thinks ‘woke’ means a diversity of opinion. That is not what ‘woke’ meant in the mid-1900s. It’s not what ‘woke’ meant during the civil rights movement.”

“It’s not what ‘woke’ meant during [Black Lives Matter],” Hostin continued. “It’s not what ‘woke’ means now. And I think he should be ashamed of some of the things he has said about wokeness. He has called college campuses too woke because they are talking about diversity and social justice and inclusion.”

Maher’s “co-opting” of the word “woke,” Hostin asserted, is a way to “take the power away from black people for standing up for what we deserve from this country.”

Hostin’s condemnation of the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host was sparked by Maher’s comments during a recent interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Despite “The View” panelist’s remarks, it seemed as if Maher had a good grasp of the history and meaning of “wokeness.”

“Democrats sometimes can take it too far,” Maher told Tapper. “I would categorize ‘liberal’ as different than ‘woke.’ … ‘Woke,’ which started out as a good thing, alert to injustice, who could be against that? But it became sort of an eye roll because [‘woke’ people] love diversity — except of ideas.”

He continued, “And that’s not really where we should be. I mean, they have a trail of very bad ideas … not building on liberalism but very often undoing it. I mean, five years ago, Abraham Lincoln was not a controversial figure among liberals. We liked him. Now, they take his name off schools and tear down his statues. Really? Lincoln isn’t good enough for you? Five, 10 years ago, bedrock liberalism was ‘we are striving to be a colorblind society where we don’t see race.’ Of course, we see it, but it doesn’t matter. … [Now] we see it all the time. It’s always the most important thing.”

CBN’s Faithwire has covered Maher’s continued rebuke of the far left.

Last summer, for example, the HBO personality lambasted Hollywood as the “wokest place on earth,” specifically condemning Tinseltown stars for repeatedly demanding gun control while continuing to make films replete with violence.

“Now that we live in an age of uber-corporate responsibility where every large company in America bends over backwards to get on the politically correct side of every issue, Hollywood has to tell us — why does that not include gun violence?” he said on his show. “When liberals scream, ‘Do something!’ after a mass shooting, why aren’t we also dealing with the fact that the average American kid sees 200,000 acts of violence on screens before the age of 18 and that, according to the FBI, one of the warning signs of a potential school shooter is ‘a fascination with violence-filled entertainment?'”

“They call them action movies,” he added later. “They should call them revenge movies, because that’s the plot of every one of them. And there’s a sick similarity in the revenge fantasies Hollywood turns out and those of school shooters.”
