The head of the Nashville school where an assailant murdered three children and three adults Monday is being heralded for her quick-thinking steps and bravery during the ordeal.

Dr. Katherine Koonce, head of school at The Covenant School, was among those murdered, but the steps she took that morning and before are credited with helping save lives.
Nashville City Councilman Russ Pulley told Fox News Koonce was in a virtual meeting when the shooting began and that she immediately got off the meeting and “headed straight for the shooter.”
“Dr. Koonce, upon hearing the first shots, ran toward the danger,” Pulley also wrote in a Facebook post.
Koonce had reportedly also prepared the school staff well before the event with the appropriate active-shooter training, equipping them for the unthinkable.
“She did what principals and headmasters do; she protected her children,” Pulley told Fox. “In addition, she prepared the school by seeking advanced-level, active-shooter training, and from witnesses at the scene, this protocol — details of which I cannot provide — saved countless lives.”
Ultimately, he believes, the school’s leader deserves praise for her preparedness and boldness.
Others also credited and praised her actions. John Bourgeois, pastor of West End Community Church in Nashville, said Koonce, a member of his congregation, sacrificed herself for the kids.
“She gave her life in defense of the children under her care,” Bourgeois wrote in a message to church members.
As CBN’s Faithwire reported, six people were murdered during Monday’s mass shooting.
Three 9-year-old children – Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus, and William Kinney — were killed. Koonce, 60, and two other adults, Cynthia Peak, 61, and Mike Hill, 61, were also slain.
