A Catholic church in New York City is facing backlash over a display titled, “God Is Trans: A Queer Spiritual Journey.”

The display at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle is drawing the ire of some parishioners, according to the New York Post, with one member saying, “The church should not be promoting this.”

“I understand there are transgender people,” the churchgoer told the Post. “I pray for all people, but enough is enough. It seems like they are trying to force the agenda on others. Also, when a friend asked a priest about this, they didn’t answer; you can’t put this out on the altar and then hide.”

“That’s what gets the church in trouble,” the congregant added.

The Manhattan based Catholic Church of St. Paul the Apostle is holding an exhibition called ‘God is Trans: A Queer Spiritual Journey’ exploring gender ideology and it’s supposed link to finding God.

Artist Adah Unachukwu described the exhibit as “a queer spiritual journey” in three steps: “sacrifice, identity, and communion.” The designer wrote the following explanation:

Sacrifice and its complementary act in the film speak to the need to shed an old life and personhood in order to be able to focus on your spiritual need. There is no devil; just past selves. Identity is the most impactful part of the exhibition. What does holiness look like? What does your god look like? Are these two portrayals that can be merged? Finally, Communion rounds out the spiritual journey, by placing God and the mortal on the same plane to speak to one another. This part of the installation is about a spiritual home and the ways we can achieve this home in our everyday lives.

There were some, though, impressed by the exhibit at the “very liberal” church.

“I don’t understand the art, but this church is very liberal, which is why I love this church,” said Cherri Ghosh, an 80-year-old parishioner.

The Post sought comment from the spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, but he declined to offer a statement on the matter, telling the outlet he was not aware of the exhibit.

In 2019, it should be noted, the Vatican released a document addressing transgenderism. The document, titled “Male and Female He Created Them,” stated the right to “choose one’s gender” is in “direct contradiction of the model of marriage as being between one man and one woman.”

It also explained that one’s sex and gender cannot be changed and any assertion to the contrary is not “based on the truths of existence.”
