A woman has been severely injured in a stabbing attack that occurred in the northern Israeli city of Afula on Monday.
The 18-year-old victim has been identified as Shuva Malka, a resident of Migdal Ha’emek. The attacker, a Palestinian man, fled the scene after the attack and was quickly apprehended by authorities, who also shot him in the leg. Police said that the man was from the northern West Bank city of Jenin.
The teen’s mother views her survival as nothing short of divine intervention. “God gave us a great miracle,” she said after her daughter narrowly escaped death. “She was on her way to exams when she saw a terrorist with a knife in front of her,” she told Israel National News. “He brutally stabbed her several times. I expect the State to take responsibility for the safety of our children so that they can feel safe while waiting at a bus stop without having to worry about dangers lurking ahead.”

“Police shot the suspect in the leg after calling upon him to stop,” a police spokesperson said, according to the Times of Israel. “The suspect was arrested with a knife in his possession.”
Police also added that they were working under the assumption that this was a terror attack.
“The main line of investigation is that this was a terror attack, however, the investigation is continuing in order to rule out other motives,” the police spokesperson detailed. It was also revealed that the man was in Israel illegally, as he did not possess a permit.
The victim was stabbed several times shortly before noon out on the street and collapsed in front of a local coffee shop.
“When we arrived at the scene, it was very chaotic. There was an 18-year-old girl sitting on a chair at the entrance to a store. She was conscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds to the upper body,” explained one of the medics that treated her.

The woman was rushed to the nearby HaEmek Medical Center where she was reported to be in a very serious condition.

Hospital officials have since said that her condition had stabilized but remained serious.
