Last week, Faithwire shared the heartbreaking story of one British couple who aborted their daughter at 22 weeks after learning she would likely be born with Spina Bifida, a serious birth defect that would make life “challenging” for their family. In interviews with several U.K. news outlets, the couple stressed that their decision was one of love and compassion for their daughter, stemming from their desire to spare her great suffering.
After publishing the piece, we were overwhelmed by the responses we received from readers who courageously bucked societal norms and “expert” opinions and trusted in God’s plan for their children. These faith-filled testimonies inspired the idea for our “Life Is Beautiful” series, a collection of personal accounts highlighting the ultimate blessing of choosing life.
Below is part two of our series, a testimony from reader and mother, Christina Mullally.
Lauren is the best decision we made. I was told that my life would change and be extremely challenging if I chose to go through with my pregnancy. Challenging it has been — keeping up with her academic and athletic schedules! She is the most determined young lady I’ve ever met. She doesn’t accept defeat, loves a challenge and has the sweetest soul I know. She has received High Honors with Distinction in Mathematics and Biology for the past 4 years. My husband and I shudder every time our think what my lives would be if we didn’t choose life.
Christina shared with Faithwire that her daughter Lauren, pictured above, is a two-time national ice hockey champion. When she was pregnant with her daughter, Planned Parenthood doctors tried to pressure her to have a late-term abortion “because there was a very good chance that she would have Down Syndrome and other neurological problems.”
“This was based on the length of her pinky fingers and amniocentesis because of my age,” Christina explained.
But after seeing a 3D ultrasound of her baby girl “sucking her thumb, smiling and literally playing in my womb” with her “heart beating strong,” she knew that she only had one option, and that was Lauren.
Thank you, Christina, for sharing your daughter’s incredible story. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories in our “Life Is Beautiful” series!
